Hill & Moorland - Assessment Course

Before attending a Hill and Moorland Award Assessment course you will need to complete a training course, or have evidence of exemption from training from the Mountain Training Board (www.mountain-training.org)

You need to have logged experience of a minimum of 40 quality hill days in the UK and hold a valid first aid certificate (Minimum of 16 hours)

A typical assessment course programme will look like this:

Itinerary

Day 1

Morning Meet 9.15am

  • Introductions
  • Outline of the course
  • Weather briefing and access & conservation issues
  • Hill day to include navigation 1;25,000
  • Route finding and group management
  • Question paper (weather, access and conservation issues & general knowledge)

Day 2

Morning meet at 9.15 am

  • Weather briefing and access & conservation issues
  • Hill day to include navigation 1:25,000
  • Group management & leadership skills
  • Hazard avoidance and emergency procedures
  • Night navigation

Day 3

Morning meet at 9.15 am

  • Weather briefing & access & conservation issues
  • Route planning
  • Hill day to include navigation 1:40,000 & 1:50,000
  • Group management & leadership skills
  • Individual debriefs
  • Course ends approximately 6 pm

The ratio of instructors to participants on this course is 1:4.

The cost of this course is £200 per person (Non Residential)
