Hill & Moorland - Training Course

The Hill and Moorland Award Training is a practical 3 day course which will cover the skills required to lead groups in summer conditions in the UK in the UK in terrain that may include: open, uncultivated, non-mountainous, high or remote country known as upland, moor, bog, fell or down.

Before attending an HML training course you must first register with Mountain Training (www.mountain-training.org)

In order to register with Mountain Training you must first be a member of a mountaineering council (the British Mountaineering Council, Mountaineering Council of Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland).

The pre requisite for the Hill and Moorland Award training course is logged experience of 20 quality hill days in the UK

Itinerary

Day 1

Morning Meet 9.15am

  • Introductions
  • Outline of the week ahead / the scheme and its remit
  • Weather briefing and access & conservation issues
  • Hill day to include navigation 1:25,000, route finding & group management
  • Equipment talk

Day 2

Morning meet at 9.15 am

  • Weather briefing & access and conservation issues
  • Leadership discussion / Responsibilities of the Leader
  • Hill day to include navigation 1:25,000 & leadership skills
  • Hazard avoidance and emergency procedures
  • Night navigation

Day 3

Morning meet at 9.15 am

  • Weather briefing & access and conservation issues
  • Route planning
  • Hill day to include navigation 1:40,000 & 1:50,000
  • Debriefs
  • Course ends approximately 6 pm

  • Waterproof Jacket and Trousers
  • Hat, gloves, sunhat, sunglasses
  • Walking boots and socks
  • Day rucksack
  • Rucksack liner
  • Flask
  • First aid kit
  • Gaiters
  • Headtorch
  • Compass – silva expedition type 4 is ideal
  • Maps: Snowdon Leisure 17 1:25,000 & Landranger sheet 115 1:50,000
