The Single Pitch Award provides the essential skills required to work with groups of novices on single pitch crags. The award is a suitable undertaking for experienced rock climbers who have a desire to work with such groups.
Before attending a training course you must first register with one of the 4 Mountain Training Boards (visit http://www.mltuk.org/docs/registration-spa.html). This will provide you with a logbook and your personal details will be entered onto a National database.
To make best use of the training course you must have led 15 routes outdoors, where the protection is leader placed.
Training This practical 2 day training course will cover new skills required to supervise novice groups on single pitch crags. In addition, personal climbing plays a big part of the course. A typical training course outline will look like this:

Day 1 We spend the day looking at your personal rock climbing skills with emphasis on your technical skills such as lead climbing and belay construction. Access and conservation issues will be part of the day. This day will also include a visit to a indoor wall to cover supervision skills in this popular environment.
Day 2 This day looks at group management skills, new techniques for looking after novices in rock climbing and abseiling activities with access and conservation issues. At the end of the course we conduct a review with a look at your personal action plan and logbooks.

Cost: £130 per person
Consolidation Period Between training and assessment you must consolidate new ideas and techniques and gain additional climbing experience. You will be advised about the amount of personal climbing and supervising experience you should gain. Candidates should not present themselves for assessment until they have:
- Led a minimum of 40 climbs, outdoors on leader placed protection (substantial number of these must be at Severe grade, on a variety of rock types)
- Assisted with the supervision of approximately 20 climbing sessions in a variety of locations (indoors and out)

Before attending an assessment course you must have:
- Registered on the scheme
- Attended a training course or gained exemption from training
- Gained the further experience noted above
- Proficiency in the use of indoor climbing walls
- Competently led Severe grade rock climbs on leader placed protection
- A valid First Aid Certificate (click onto Katherine Wills)
The 2 day assessment course will include an evening session (usually at the climbing wall), and candidates will be tested in accordance with the syllabus requirements. A typical assessment course may look like this:
Day 1 We spend the day assessing your personal rock climbing skills on lead climbing and belay construction. In addition to this we will be assessing your access and conservation knowledge throughout the day. This day will also include a visit to an indoor wall to cover supervision skills in this popular environment.
Day 2 This day focuses on your group management and technical skills for looking after novices in rock climbing and abseiling activities. We will expect you to solve common problems found on single pitch climbs with novice groups and structuring your sessions accordingly. Relevant access and conservation issues will also be assessed. At the end of the course we conduct an individual review with yourself to determine your outcome.

Refresher Course If you have completed a training course and now feel that you need a 1 day refresher training on the SPA scheme, then we run these on demand throughout the year for candidates looking at going for assessment. Please contact us for more information and dates.

Reassessments If you need to attend a 1 day reassessment then we can provide this for you. These will be running at all times of the year, but please make sure you complete your action plan which was drawn up by your original assessor. Please contact us for more information and dates.
