Walking Group Leader Award, Phil George, North WalesThe WGL (Walking Group Leader) is the basic award for leaders of hill walking groups in defined terrain and conditions. Such terrain includes open, uncultivated, non-mountainous high or remote country known variously as upland, moor, bog, fell or down. You should have at least one year’s hill walking experience and an interest in leading hill walking groups.

Your hill walking experience should include at least 20 hill walks where you take part in the planning, leadership, navigation, 5 hours of journey time and where adverse weather conditions may be encountered.

Before attending a training course you must first register with one of the 4 Mountain Training Boards (visit http://www.mltuk.org/docs/registration-wgl.html). This will provide you with a logbook and your personal details will be entered onto a National database.

Training
This practical 4 day course will cover new skills required to lead novice groups in non mountainous areas of the UK in summer conditions. In addition, personal skills (such as navigation, group management, emergency procedures etc) plays a big part of the course. A typical training course outline will look like this:

Day 1

Day 2

  • Night navigation exercise

Day 4
Final day. Hazards and emergency procedures.

Cost: £195 per person

Consolidation period
Between training and assessment you must consolidate new ideas and techniques and gain further walking experience. You will be advised about the amount of personal walking and supervising experience you should gain. Candidates should not present themselves for assessment until they have:

  • A minimum of 40 hill walking days
  • A valid First Aid Certificate (click onto Katherine Wills)

Assessment
