The MLA (Mountain Leader Award Summer) was established to promote the safe enjoyment of the hills and mountains of the UK. The mountain leader award scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in the mountains of the UK, in non winter conditions.
Before attending a training course you must first register with one of the 4 Mountain Training Boards (visit http://www.mltuk.org/docs/registration-ml.html). This will provide you with a logbook and your personal details will be entered onto a National database.
Your mountain walking experience prior to attending a training course should include 20 quality mountain days. These quality days should take the following into consideration; The exploration of new areas, the terrain covered and the physical and mental challenge. Your quality day should include a journey of over 5 hours, major planning and leadership contributions and navigational elements away off the beaten track.
