The WGL (Walking Group Leader) is the basic award for leaders of hill walking groups in defined terrain and conditions. Such terrain includes open, uncultivated, non-mountainous high or remote country known variously as upland, moor, bog, fell or down. You should have at least one year’s hill walking experience and an interest in leading hill walking groups.
Your hill walking experience should include at least 20 hill walks where you take part in the planning, leadership, navigation, 5 hours of journey time and where adverse weather conditions may be encountered.
Before attending a training course you must first register with one of the 4 Mountain Training Boards (visit http://www.mltuk.org/docs/registration-wgl.html). This will provide you with a logbook and your personal details will be entered onto a National database.
