Winter Mountain Leader Award - Assessment Course

Before attending an assessment course you must first:

  • Have completed an approved WML training course or have proof of exemption from training.
  • Completed a minimum of 40 quality winter mountain days and climbed a minimum of ten Grade one gullies.
  • Hold a current, relevant First Aid certificate.

During this five day assessment course, two nights will be spent snow-holing in a high mountain setting. You should ensure that you are fit enough for full winter conditions.

A typical assessment course outline will look like this:

Itinerary

Day 1

  • Meet 9am
  • Introductions and briefing for the week
  • Assessment of personal skills: Teaching movement skills /
    self-arrest / crampon technique / snow pack evaluation and awareness of snow conditions.
  • Evening: Home paper discussion

Day 2

  • Security on steep ground.
  • Evening: Expedition preparation

Day 3

  • Expedition: Party management,  route choice and navigation.
  • Night navigation & overnight camp (snow hole)

Day 4

  • Expedition continues

Day 5

  • Return from expedition
  • Individual debriefs
  • End of course approx. 4pm

The ratio of instructors to participants on this course is 1:4.
